BACKGROUND NOTE
Born on July 6, 1877, at Steele City, Nebraska, Hugh Elton Clapp graduated from Fairbury High School in 1896. He enlisted with Co. D, 1st Nebraska Infantry in Lincoln, on June 28, 1897. Clapp was mustered into service on May 10, 1898, and mustered out August 23, 1899. He was wounded in action at Guiguinto in the Philippines on March 30, 1899. Following his discharge, he enrolled in the University of Nebraska College of Law and graduated with the class of 1902. On April 18, 1903, Clapp enlisted in Co. D, 2nd Nebraska Infantry, and discharged on August 11, 1904 to accept commission. He opened a private practice and later became an official in the engineering department at Lincoln. He held that position until his retirement. During his administration, Governor Keith Neville appointed Mr. Clapp as Adjutant General and held the rank of Brigadier General.
Hugh Elton Clapp married Jennie Herron at Boise, Idaho, on April 20, 1904. Mrs. Clapp died in 1962, and that same year Hugh became a patient at the Grand Island Veteran’s Hospital. Clapp was a member of the Spanish American War Veterans’ Post at Lincoln and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He was one of the last survivors of the Spanish-American War. Hugh Elton Clapp died at Grand Island, Nebraska, on March 24, 1976.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists mostly of items relating to Hugh Elton Clapp’s military service during the Spanish-American War. Included in the collection are a diary, June-August 1898; ledger of the First Nebraska Volunteer Infantry, 1903-1909; roster of Company D, First Nebraska Volunteer Infantry, 1898-1928; newspapers, 1899; and Philippine memorabilia, c.1898-1899. Also included are an autograph book and a Steel City High School student publication. The bulk of the collection dates from 1898 to 1899.
