BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Dr. Inez Celia Philbrick practiced medicine in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1893 to 1937. Her education included a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Iowa in 1886, which was followed by a teaching position at Fargo, North Dakota. Later she obtained her Master of Arts Degree at the University of Iowa and then earned her medical degree from Women’s Medical College of Philadelphia in 1891. Dr. Philbrick was active in the women’s suffrage movement in the early 1900s and later devoted much of her time promoting the passage of legislation which would have legalized euthanasia. After retiring in 1937, she lived in Dayton, Ohio and in Riverside, California. Dr. Philbrick passed away on December 25, 1966 in Riverside, California. She is buried in the Oakland Cemetery at Iowa City, Iowa.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in three series: (1) General Correspondence, 1894-1844; (2) Printed Matter, and (3) Scrapbook.
The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence and printed matter relating to Dr. Philbrick’s activities in support of women’s suffrage, euthanasia, and education. Correspondents include: Susan B. Anthony (1894, 1903), Mary B. Bryan (1900, 1906), Emmeline (Goulden) Pankhurst (1911), Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1902), and Henry Moore Teller (1907).
