BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Ohio on October 12, 1842, Ira P. Griswold served in the 103rd Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. He married Lucy Hall at Portage, Ohio, on March 31, 1869. They had one daughter, Minnie, in 1874. The Griswolds were living in Detroit, Michigan, in the late 1870s. They made several trips to Nebraska in 1888 where they purchased land at Plum Creek (later Lexington). Ira farmed at Lexington until his death on January 21, 1918. After Ira’s death, Lucy went to Eugene, Oregon, to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Minnie and Matthew Douglass. Lucy Griswold died in Eugene, Oregon, on December 24, 1920. Ira and Lucy Griswold are buried in Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one item and account book maintained by Ira and Lucy Griswold. Entries in the account book date between 1887 and 1900. Entries for expenses start out when the family is living in Detroit, Michigan, and then later entries show expenses in Nebraska. Page 25 lists taxes paid on SE ¼ Sec. 29 T. 10 R. 21 W. and NW ¼ Sec. 9 T. 10 R. 21 in Dawson County, Nebraska. The Standard Atlas of Dawson County (G.A. Ogle, 1904) assigns these lands to Ira P. Griswold and L.M. Griswold. Sec. 9 was “Lucy’s land” (p.25). Other expenses listed throughout include groceries, haircuts, clothing, GAR dues, etc.
