BACKGROUND NOTE
James C. Dellett was born in Pennsylvania in 1829. He married Jeanette Auld in 1853. Dellett served as a teacher in Pennsylvania before coming to Nebraska Territory to teach at the Otoe & Omaha Mission Station. After a time he returned to Pennsylvania. James C. Dellett died on July 16, 1860. He is buried in Milroy Presbyterian Cemetery at Milroy, Pennsylvania.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of two letters written by James C. Dellett from the Otoe & Omaha Mission Station. The first letter (in typescript form only) is dated August 15, 1853 and is written to Thomas Watson. The second letter (original and typescript copy) is dated February 11, 1854 and is written to A.C. Watson. The letters describe Dellett’s experiences and his attitudes about Native Americans.
Note: The original 1854 letter is fragile and restricted for preservation. Researchers are asked to use the preservation photocopy and/or typescript.
