SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection contains a letter dated January 10, 1903, from James Kennedy of Kansas City, Missouri to A.E. Sheldon, director of the Nebraska State Historical Society, along with a copy of an undated newspaper interview of Kennedy. The article relates Kennedy’s life as a riverboat captain on the Missouri River from 1856-1879. He mentions ships’ names, their working history, ship accidents, pilots’ names, etc. He reflects on the causes of the demise of Missouri River navigation. Kennedy’s sister Ellen is mentioned as having escaped from an 1858 ship fire.
