SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of miscellaneous papers relating to John Hansen, and to telegraph and early radio operation in Lincoln, Nebraska. It includes an American Radio Relay League Certificate for Hansen, July 25, 1938; clippings; a printed image, possibly of Hansen in the basement room of his house; an obituary; and a scrapbook. The scrapbook covers the years 1918-1920 and includes telegrams intercepted during specific local and national events, telegram tests, notes, diagrams, and logs.



The photographic portion of this collection (stored with the manuscript items) consists of one photograph of a framed collage of cablegrams and telegrams, accompanied by nine slides of Mr. Hansen’s basement radio/telegraph room as it was in April of 1997. The slides were taken by Historical Society staff before the room was remodeled by the present owner.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
