John G. Tinney, son of John and Bridget Tinney, was born in Pennsylvania on July 25, 1858.  By 1880 he was living in La Fayette, Wisconsin.  The 1890-1891 Gazetteer shows that he was a resident of Pilger, Stanton County, Nebraska.  In 1892 he was listed as a member of the Board of County Commissioners.  As an implement dealer, Tinney sold hardware goods and John Deere farm equipment.  He also bought hogs and cattle.  The 1900 census shows that Tinney was unmarried.  He probably married Charlotte Rae Matheson of Pilger sometime after 1900.  John G. Tinney died on June 5, 1927 and was buried in the Pilger Cemetery.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
