BACKGROUND NOTE



John Q. Goss was born at Somersetshire, England, March 8, 1827. He came to American in 1844, settling in Ohio where he taught school for about nine years. He read law and was admitted to the bar in Mansfield, Ohio, in 1857. He came to Nebraska two years later and located at Bellevue. Goss represented Sarpy, Washington, Burt, and Cumings Counties in the territorial legislature in 1860. In 1862 he was appointed quartermaster general of the territory of Nebraska and later that year enlisted in the Second Nebraska Cavalry, serving until 1863 when he was promoted to first lieutenant. He was elected prosecuting attorney for Sarpy County in 1864 and held numerous other county and municipal offices. Judge Goss was a charter member of the Nebraska Lodge No. 1, A.F. & A.M., which he joined in 1869, and held office there for years. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias, which he joined when it was organized in the state. He was also organizer of the first Pythian Lodge in Missouri. A wife and one daughter, Mrs. Emma Thompson survived him. John Q. Goss died on March 19, 1918.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one box of materials relating to John Q. Goss. Included are manuscripts written by John Goss about the Indian Campaign in South Dakota in 1862-1863, and a history of the Nebraska Soldiers’ Association.  Also included are deeds, commissions in the Nebraska volunteers, admissions to practice before the bar, a real estate transaction book, biographical information and miscellany.  Materials in the collection date from ca. 1857-1918.

The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
