BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Maine on November 8, 1815, Joseph Gould served as a corporal in the 86th New York Infantry, Co. E, during the Civil War. Prior to coming to Nebraska, Gould had operated generals stores in Pennsylvania and New York. After coming to Nebraska in 1871, Gould established a general store in Republican City, Nebraska. Joseph Gould died in Republican City on May 23, 1882. He is buried in the Republican City Cemetery.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of three volumes of business records relating to Joseph Gould’s general store in Republican City, Nebraska. The records date from 1879 to 1883. Included are an account book, a cash book and a cash receipts and disbursals volume.
Note: Additional volumes relating to accounts of general stores operated by Gould prior to his arrival in Nebraska were transferred to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
