BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Illinois around 1857, Julia Alves married Samuel Baptist in Scott County, Illinois, on July 28, 1876. By 1885, the couple was living with their three and farming in Phelps County, Nebraska. By 1900, the Baptist family had returned to Illinois. Samuel Baptist died in 1907. Julia Baptist died at Jacksonville, Illinois, in February of 1914.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder containing letters written by Julia Baptist to her sister, Lizzie. The letters date from 1885-1888. The letters describe pioneer life on the Nebraska frontier during the 1880’s, including day-to-day life, the surroundings, personal matters and the weather.
