BACKGROUND NOTE
 
Constructed on the North Platte River in Keith County between 1936 and 1941, Kingsley Dam was one of the largest public works projects in Nebraska during the 1930s. Built to store water for irrigation and create hydroelectric power, the construction of Kingsley Dam created the reservoir known as Lake McConaughy, Nebraska’s largest lake. George Kingsley, a banker from Minden, Nebraska, and C.W. McConaughy, a grain merchant and mayor of Holdrege, Nebraska, were two of the project’s leading promoters.
 
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
 
This collection consists of various informational materials relating to Kingsley Dam and Lake McConaughy. Included in the collection are a “History of Kingsley-Keystone Dam,” which is a summary of dredging operations by the Minneapolis Dredging Company; informational materials from the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District and the Nebraska Reclamation Association, and informational materials about dredging equipment used in the construction of Kingsley Dam.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
