BACKGROUND NOTE
Laura (White) Ulmer, daughter of Arthur and Clara White, was born at Arispe, Iowa, on March 7, 1896. The family moved to Ashton, Nebraska, where she graduated from high school. Laura taught school for a year in Ashton before attending Le Mars Normal School at Le Mars, Iowa, where she graduated in 1918. She returned to Ashton where she taught school and served as principal for a year before getting married.
Laura White married Dr. Walter P. Ulmer, and the couple served as missionaries in China under the board of the Evangelical United Brethren church. They served as missionaries from 1924 to 1930 and again from 1932 to 1938. Upon returning to the United States, Dr. Ulmer opened an office in Dawson, Nebraska. Dr. Walter Ulmer died in 1972. Laura (White) Ulmer died on May 2, 1974. Both are buried in Heim Cemetery at Dawson, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of three reels of microfilm containing the diaries of Laura (White) Ulmer dating from 1924 to 1938. The diaries document her time serving as a missionary in China. The first diary dates from 1924 to 1930. The second diary dates from 1932 to 1938.
Note: History Nebraska does not hold the original diaries. They were loaned for microfilming in 1975. Evelyn Ulmer of Dawson, Nebraska, copyrighted the diaries as “China Diary of Laura M. White Ulmer” in 1988.
