BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Leta Stetter, the daughter of John G. and Margaret Danley Stetter, was born on May 25, 1886 on the homestead of her grandfather near Chadron, Nebraska. She received her early education in the public schools of Dawes County, Nebraska, and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1906 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She subsequently taught in the DeWitt, Nebraska public school system until 1907, and the following year in the public schools of McCook, Nebraska. In 1908 she married Harry L. Hollingworth of DeWitt, Nebraska.
The Hollingworths moved to New York, where Leta began post-graduate studies at Columbia University. She received her Master of Arts Degree from Columbia in 1913, and her Doctorate from the same institution in 1916. From 1916 until her death, Dr. Hollingworth was associated with the Education Department of Columbia University, becoming a full professor in 1929. She was especially active in the field of educational psychology relating to the instruction of mentally challenged and gifted children.
Dr. Hollingworth was affiliated with the National Education Association, the American Psychological Association, Chi Omega, and Kappa Delta Phi. On June 6, 1938, she was awarded an honorary LLD. Degree by the University of Nebraska for her accomplishments in the field of Educational Psychology. She served as the Associate Editor of The Journal of Genetic Psychology.
Leta Stetter Hollingworth died on November 27, 1939 in New York City.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of materials relating to the work of Dr. Leta Stetter Hollingworth. It is arranged in three Series: 1) Published material, 1913-1940; 2) Manuscripts, 1914-1939; and 3) Biographical material. Together, the published materials and manuscripts form a corpus of her professional articles as listed in the “Bibliography of Leta S. Hollingworth,” in “Education and the Individual: In Honor of Leta S. Hollingworth,” Teachers College Record, December 1940, pp. 188-195. The biographical materials include only a few, short articles about her.
