BACKGROUND NOTE

Forty-two charter members founded the Audubon Naturalists’ Club in 1951 “to promote interest in all branches of natural science including flowers, insects, trees, birds, geology, mammals, stars and reptiles.” The club organized regular field trips, programs, and special projects, with particular focus on conducting regular bird counts in cooperation with the National Audubon Society and the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union. The ANC handled the Christmas Bird Count in the Lincoln area from 1951-1994. After the Wachiska Chapter of the National Audubon Society was established in Lincoln, the ANC changed its name to the Naturalists’ Club of Lincoln, then used the name Lincoln Naturalists’ Club. The accounts of the Lincoln Naturalists’ Club were closed in March 2001 and the balance in the account was given to the Wachiska Audubon Chapter to be used towards the purchase of land at Spring Creek Prairie. Members of the Lincoln Naturalists’ Club continued to meet informally.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
