BACKGROUND NOTE
Born September 28, 1887, at Oakdale, Nebraska, Luther R. Swanson graduated from the University of Nebraska before serving with the Army Corps of Engineers during World War I. In 1917, he had his last name changed to Branting, the old family name. Branting worked for the Burlington Railroad and the Interstate Commerce Commission before becoming the works manager for the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) at Bauxite, Arkansas. Branting married Louise Misko, and the couple had four children. Branting was a member of the American Association of Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Scimitar Shrine Temple, and the Little Rock Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas. Luther R. Branting died in Little Rock, Arkansas, on September 15, 1957. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one folder of materials relating to Luther R. (Swanson) Branting’s military service during World War I. The bulk of the materials consist of correspondence from Swanson to members of his family, or from the War Department to Swanson. Also included are several newspaper clippings, including an obituary for Luther R. Branting, a brief biographical sketch of Branting written by his wife, and an issue of Pick and Shovel, containing information about Branting. The collection dates from 1917 to 1957.
