BACKGROUND NOTE

Marion Stephen “Steve” Daily was born September 6, 1877 at Bard, Louisa County, Iowa.  Steve moved with his parents to Sterling, Colorado, when he was twelve.  A short time later the family moved to Milburn, Nebraska, where Steve lived the rest of his life.  He worked on the family farm and later taught school for a short time.  He married Gertie Dell Farley on May 4, 1901.  The couple had one daughter and eight sons.  Steve was active in community affairs and served over thirty years on the local school board.  Marion Stephen Daily died on September 6, 1966, at his home near Milburn.  He was buried at the Victoria Creek Cemetery near Anselmo, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of 30 volumes of journals/day books compiled by M.S. “Steve” Daily of Milburn, Custer County, Nebraska.  The volumes date from 1905-1966 and contain daily/weekly information on work/farming activities, weather, items purchased, local/family news, etc.  Also included is an envelope containing copies of newspaper clippings, transcripts of certain day book entries, and print copies of various family photos.

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
