SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The manuscript portion of this collection consists of items relating to the education of Charles Harlan Madden, his daughter Barbara Madden, and Mildred Hazel Hutchins who may have been married to Charles. Includes high school and college diplomas, Barbara’s high school autograph book, and copies from a 1924 edition of The Peruvian yearbook from Peru State Teachers’ College, Peru, Nebraska. Also includes one black and white studio portrait of Barbara Madden from 1953, and one black and white portrait of the Oakland High School Senior Class of 1953 attached inside Barbara’s autograph book.



Note:  See the photo component [RG5245.PH] for one black and white studio portrait, nine black and white snapshots, and one black and white negative of unidentified people and buildings, ca. 1925-1935. The original copy of Charles Madden’s Peruvian is now housed in the Library Collections.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
