BACKGROUND NOTE



Born in May of 1891, Marguerite Nesbit was the daughter of Dr. Andrew and Marietta Nesbit.  Marguerite grew up in Tekamah, Nebraska, and by 1920 she was working as a librarian in Arizona, Burt County, Nebraska.  The 1930 census shows Marguerite working in a library in Lincoln, Nebraska.  It is unknown what happened to Nesbit after 1930.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one item, a typescript copy of a paper entitled, “Nebraska and Carnegie Libraries,” by Marguerite Nesbit, 1930.  The paper includes historical information about Nebraska, Andrew Carnegie, and the founding of various public libraries across Nebraska.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
