BACKGROUND NOTE



Born December 3, 1853 in Connecticut to Benjamin and Mary Sumner, Minnie Sumner taught school in Vernon, Connecticut in the late 1870s and early 1880s.  She married Rev. Charles Preston on November 24, 1890.   The Prestons lived in Thedford, Nebraska in 1900 and in 1910 had moved to Lincoln, Nebraska.  By 1920 the Prestons had moved to California.  Minnie (Sumner) Preston died in Sonoma County, California on April 14, 1941.  She is buried next to her husband in Sebastopol Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Sebastopol, California.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one item, a nineteen page paper (photocopy only) read by Minnie Preston at the state meeting of the Woman’s Home Missionary Union in October of 1900.  The paper describes the Missionary Union’s efforts to increase opportunities for religious services, especially in the Sandhills area of western Nebraska.  Included are descriptions of religious activities around Thomas County, Nebraska.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
