HISTORICAL NOTE

On July 6, 1916, a group of women met to plan a state golf tournament for women which was held July 24-28 at the Field Country Club in Omaha.  On July 26, a permanent organization, the Nebraska Women’s State Golf Association, was formed “to promote general interest in the game of golf in Nebraska” and “to provide for a women’s annual State Tournament.”  The main activity of the association has been to sponsor this tournament which has been held annually except for the war years, 1918-1919 and 1942-1945.  In 1953 the name was changed to the Nebraska Women’s State Invitational Golf Association.  Then, in 1973, the organization changed their name to Nebraska Women’s Amateur Golf Association.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection of the records of the Nebraska Women’s State Invitational Golf Association, contained in two boxes and two oversize scrapbooks, is arranged in two series:  1) Administrative Files, 1916-1972; and 2) Scrapbooks, 1950-1966.

The bulk of the collection consists of the administrative files which contain correspondence, minutes of meetings, financial reports, and membership rolls, as well as clippings, brochures, and photographs.  For the years 1916-1951, the financial records were kept in a separate volume.  The file for 1956 contains a letter from Louise Pound in which she summarized her lifetime of athletic activities.  The scrapbooks contain announcements, photographs, clippings, and programs concerning the annual tournament.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
