BACKGROUND NOTE

Oliver H. Taylor was born in Gloversville, New York, on October 16, 1836.  He married Maria Onderkirk, and the couple had four children; sons William Dewitt and Charles H. Taylor, and daughters Francis M. and Emma Taylor.  While in New York, Oliver worked as a cutter in a glove factory.  The Taylors moved to Nebraska in 1872, and filed for land near Alda in Hall County, Nebraska.  They received their patent in 1880.  Oliver H. Taylor died on April 19, 1902.  Maria Taylor died on May 30, 1915.  Both are buried in Alda Cemetery at Alda, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection relates to the life of Oliver H. Taylor.  It is arranged in two series:  1) Diaries, 1866-1882, and undated; and 2) Miscellaneous.  Entries in the diaries of Series 1 are brief, and relate mostly to Taylor’s work:  farm chores and labor for hire.  Taylor also makes almost daily comments about the weather.  Both the original diaries and transcripts of the diaries are included.  Series 2 contains an account book, 1860; copies of miscellaneous documents, and a photocopy of a portrait of Taylor.
