BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Paulina Catherine Gillilan, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Gillilan, was born in Linn County, Iowa on November 8, 1851. She married Marlin Peet in 1869 and resided in Iowa during the early years of their marriage. After living in Clay County, South Dakota, the Peets moved to Keya Paha County, Nebraska in 1891. The last of their six children was born there the following year.
The Peets engaged in ranching and acquired a considerable amount of land. In later years they retired to the town of Burton, where Marlin Peet died in 1926. Paulina spent the last years of her life in Lusk, Wyoming where she resided with one of her sons. She died there on July 6, 1935.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of four letters, 1898-1941 and undated. The collection includes three letters written by Paulina Peet and a cover letter accompanying one of them. An 1898 letter written by Mrs. Peet to her son Dale, who was then residing in Viola, Iowa, describes the winter weather and the conditions of livestock in the Springview, Keya Paha County area, improvements to the family farm, and family news and social events. A 1925 letter to her granddaughter discusses family news during a visit to Lusk, Wyoming. An undated Thanksgiving message to her friends in the Ladies Aid of Brocksburg, Nebraska is accompanied by a 1941 cover letter written by one of the Ladies Aid members who reminiscences about Mrs. Peet.
