Per Axel Rydberg was born July 6, 1860, in Odh, Westergoethland, Sweden.  He graduated from the royal gymnasium at Skara in 1881 and migrated to the United States in 1882.  He began teaching mathematics at Luther Academy at Wahoo, Nebraska, from 1884-1893.  During this period he received his B.S. degree from the University of Nebraska in 1891 and a Master of Arts degree in 1895.  In 1898 Rydberg received his Ph.D. degree from Columbia University and worked with the New York Botanical Gardens from 1898 until his death on July 25, 1931.  Among his best know publications are The Flora of the Rocky Mountains and Adjacent Plains and the Flora of the Plains and Prairies of North America.

This collection consists of one folder containing a report written in 1891 by Rydberg while on a botanical survey for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  The report describes the nature of the vegetation of Nebraska, and is divided into two parts:  1) the itinerary of the trip; and 2) the strictly technical list of the collected plants.  This report was published in the Nebraska History, Volume 32, no. 3, 1951.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
