BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in New York in 1838, Joel Warner served with Company E of the 134th New York Infantry during the Civil War. Afterwards, Warner came to Nebraska Territory in August of 1865. He taught school at Bellevue and Columbus, Nebraska, before being appointed as government teacher to the Omaha Tribe. After several years, he became an ordained Presbyterian minister in the Nebraska Synod. Rev. Warner married Amanda Hamilton, and the couple was together for forty-two years, spending the last few years at Hooper, Nebraska. Mrs. Warner died in 1923. Rev. Warner served various churches in Nebraska for nearly forty-eight years. He died at Hooper, Nebraska, on June 8, 1925.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one folder containing a set of handwritten, as well as typed, reminiscences written in 1909 by Rev. Joel Warner. Also included are several letters written by Warner to C.S. Paine of the Nebraska State Historical Society; newspaper clippings of letters and reminiscences by Warner published in the Looking Glass newspaper at Monroe, Nebraska; and a biographical sketch and research information about Rev. William Hamilton (Warner’s father-in-law). The bulk of the reminiscences relate to the early history of Bellevue and Columbus areas in Nebraska.
