BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Born on April 17, 1932, Richard Dean Rowen was the son of Earl and Pauline Rowen. He attended public school in Auburn and Nebraska City, Nebraska. Rowen served in the security division of the U.S. Army for three years before attending the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1958 with a B.S. in Education. He taught school at Mead and Syracuse, Nebraska, and served as director of the Brownville Historical Society. He purchased and restored the Muir House in Brownville and later helped with the restoration of Fairview, William Jennings Bryanís home in Lincoln.

In 1960, Rowen joined the staff of the Nebraska State Historical Society as the Curator of History. Richard Dean Rowen was killed in a car accident near Auburn, Nebraska on January 26, 1963. He was interred at Camp Creek Cemetery in Otoe County, Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was engaged to be married to Miss Marialice Bullock of Lincoln.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Richard Dean Rowen collection contains research data compiled while Rowen was curator of history at the Nebraska State Historical Society. Largely typewritten, the research notes are arranged in three major categories: Brownville, Louis Neal, and the 1878 Indian raid.

This collection relates largely to the early history of Brownville, Nebraska, 1854-1878; to the life of Louis Neals (also known as Louis Neales, Louis Neal, and Lewis Neal), an early Nebraska settler who married Susan Fontenelle, sister of Logan Fontenelle, Chief of the Omaha; and to the Indian raid of 1878 in the Kansas counties of Decatur and Rawlins. Biographical information about Richard Rowen is also included.
