BACKGROUND NOTE
Robert Douglas Scott was born in Bala, Kansas, on November 12, 1878. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska in 1910, was a student at the University of Chicago during the summers of 1917-1922, and attended the National University of Ireland, Dublin, in 1927. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1930.
Scott became affiliated with the University of Nebraska, teaching in the English Department, and was chairman of the Department of Dramatic Literature from 1931-1934. Dr. Scott was the author of the book, The Thumb of Knowledge in Legends of Finn, Sigurd, and Taliesin, which was published in 1930. In 1915 and 1916, Scott undertook the theatrical direction of the “Pageant of Lincoln” a dramatic work depicting the founding of Lincoln, Nebraska. The Pageant was written by Dr. Hartley Burr Alexander.
Dr. Scott was also involved in the study of the Gaelic and Celtic cultures and was partially responsible for the revival of interest in such studies. He died on November 15, 1968.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of various materials relating to Robert Scott’s work with the Pageant of Lincoln. The collection includes two scripts containing background information and program notes, newspaper clippings and two scrapbooks. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings as well as photographs of the productions. The materials in the collection date from 1915 to 1916.
