BACKGROUND NOTE



Born in McCook, Nebraska, on January 4, 1911, Ruth Diamond graduated from Lincoln High School (Lincoln, Nebraska) in 1927.  She attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1931.  Ruth taught physical education at the Municipal University of Omaha from 1931 to 1942.  She also taught swimming as a volunteer with the American Red Cross.  In 1942, Diamond volunteered for the Red Cross overseas program.  She served in various capacities in England and France during World War II.  Ruth returned to the United States in 1944, and then in 1946, she married Harry Levinson.  Ruth went to work for the University of Nebraska (Lincoln), serving as an instructor in the Physical Education department for twenty-two years.  Ruth (Diamond) Levinson died on February 3, 2013.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one folder containing various items relating to Ruth (Diamond) Levinson’s work with the American Red Cross during World War II.  Included are correspondence, newsletters, newspaper clippings and other miscellany.  The materials in the collection date from ca. 1942 to 1946.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
