BACKGROUND NOTE

Samuel R. Hall was born in England on August 6, 1854. Apparently, he emigrated to the United States with his parents shortly after and spent his youth in Gilman, Illinois. On May 3, 1875, Hall purchased eighty acres of land located in Stevens’ Creek Precinct, Lancaster County, Nebraska, from the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. On March 12, 1882, Samuel Hall was married in Illinois to Sarah McKinney. Three daughters were born to the Halls at their home in Stevens’ Creek Precinct, east of Havelock. The family moved into Havelock in 1910. Sarah died there in 1918. Samuel apparently remarried and died there on December 17, 1925.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in three series: 1) Account Book, 1885-1908; 2) Diaries, 1871-1908; and 3) Miscellany. This material relates to the crops and livestock produced by Samuel R. Hall on his farm located near Prairie Home, east of Havelock. The account book, 1885-1908, of Series 1 provides a history of transactions for each product raised and sold. Included are Hall’s records for crops of wheat, oats, rye, hay, and seed; livestock of hogs, cattle, horses, and mules; and dairy, garden, and fruit products. Information on amount produced and sold and the amount realized is given for each year. Additional figures on receipts and expenditures are also provided.

Series 2 consists of forty-nine volumes of diaries kept by Samuel Hall from 1871 to 1925. Hall’s extremely brief entries list his daily farm tasks, some social activities and weather conditions. Most of these volumes also include a cash account record of items or services bought and sold by Hall. The miscellany of Series 3 includes certificates, cards, and two memorandum books.
