BACKGROUND NOTE



The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) started out as the American Society of Tool Engineers.  Founded in Detroit in 1932, the name of the organization changed to the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers in 1960, and then on September 4, 1969, they adopted the name, Society of Manufacturing Engineers.  Membership is open to professionals, educators and students who are passionate about manufacturing.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of records of the Southeast Nebraska Chapter 222 of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.  The records date from 1974 to 1980 and include meeting agendas and minutes, correspondence, membership lists, event programs, newsletters and financial information.  The records are organized by year.  Some of the earlier records include information from Sub-Chapters 25 and 103.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
