BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
William H. and Noble B. Strong were natives of Connecticut. The brothers arrived in Johnson County, Nebraska Territory as homesteaders in 1856 and were among the earliest settlers in the area. William farmed at various locations in Johnson County until he moved to Missouri around 1894. Noble, who had rented his farm to William while he taught school in Missouri, left Nebraska by 1860. William H. Strong died in Willow Springs, Missouri on August 11, 1897. No further information is available on Noble Strong.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of twenty-five letters dating from 1855-1864. William H. and Noble B. Strong wrote the letters (typescripts only) from Vesta and Tecumseh, Nebraska Territory to their family in Connecticut. The letters describe the land quality in the area, the increase in population and settlement, the difficulties of settling a new region on the frontier, farm and provisions costs and availability, travelers on their way to the gold fields of Colorado and Idaho, the financial condition of Nebraska Territory, and crop production and prices for crops grown. A few of Noble’s letters were written from Iowa, prior to his arrival in Nebraska, and Missouri, where he took teaching jobs to supplement his income.
