HISTORICAL NOTE
On April 22, 1872, a formal notice of intention to organize an Episcopal Parish at Crete, Nebraska, was presented to Bishop Clarkson and on July 29, he gave his approval to the proposed organization. A sum of $2,000 was donated by the Misses Dater of New York for the construction of a church provided that the parish could raise $1,000 for a Rectory. The Rectory was built that same year, and the construction of the church followed soon afterwards. The first Rector was Rev. A.T. Whitten who officiated until 1878.
During the ministry of Rev. C.T. Brady in 1891, the rectory was remodeled. Rev. Brady also supervised the establishment of an Episcopal Church in the community of Wilber, Nebraska. Between 1892 and 1921, the church at Crete was closed for long periods of time for lack of interest or sufficient membership to maintain an active congregation. After 1922, regular services were again conducted, often by visiting ministers or lay officials.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one reel of microfilm containing four volumes of records of the Trinity Memorial Church of Crete, Nebraska. The records date from 1871-1976 and are arranged in two series: 1) Church Registers, 1871-1976; and 2) Printed Matter, 1889-1933.
The bulk of these records consists of church registers relating to the activities of the Trinity Memorial Church, 1871-1976. They include the church history, baptisms, marriages, deaths, and memberships. One volume is a monthly paper, “The Reaper” published 1889-1891, during the ministry of Rev. C.T. Brady. Although “The Reaper” deals mostly with church activities, some of the articles relate to Rev. Brady’s views on prohibition and politics.
