BACKGROUND NOTE

Ludwig Weber, though of German ancestry, was born in Balzer, Russia in February, 1845.  With his wife Maria and their children, he emigrated to the United States in 1877, arriving on July 3^rd.  Weber settled on a farm southwest of Friend, Saline County, Nebraska.  He lived there until 1896 when he moved into the town of Friend.  Ludwig Weber died in Friend on October 1, 1937.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of correspondence dating from 1877-1930.  The material relates to life in the Volga region of Russia as experienced by relatives of the Weber family.  The relatives that stayed in Russia describe the poverty and hardships of life in the Volga region.  They also ask questions about life in America, particularly about farming conditions and the practice of religion.  Only one piece of correspondence (dated Feb. 25, 1885) is written by a Weber relative in America.  This letter from Christian Weber of Lesterville, Dakota expresses his interest in returning to the more moderate temperatures of Nebraska.  All of the original correspondence is written in German.  A typed translation of each letter is available.
