BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, on August 1, 1811, William Hamilton graduated from Jefferson College and married Julia Griffin of in Washington, Pennsylvania. Hamilton became an ordained minister, and in 1837, the Presbytery of Northumberland appointed him to take over the Iowa and Sac Mission near St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1853, Rev. Hamilton transferred to the Omaha Indian Mission in Bellevue, Nebraska. Julia Hamilton died in 1868. In 1869, Rev. Hamilton married Etta Hunting, and the couple had three children. Rev. William Hamilton continued his work at the Omaha Indian Mission until his death on September 17, 1891.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder containing three items. The first item, Rev. Hamilton’s handwritten book of sermons in both English and Omaha language, dates from the 1870s. The second item is a booklet published ca. 1880 containing the Omaha alphabet and various Bible verses, prayers and hymns translated into Omaha. The last item, a newspaper clipping about Hamilton’s daughters visiting the Omaha Indian Mission years later, is undated.
