Born on March 19, 1843 in Stark County, Ohio to Stephen and Isabelle Powell, William Powell came to Nebraska with his family in 1857.  The Powell family was living in Johnson County in 1860.  William enlisted in the First Nebraska Cavalry on August 12, 1864 and mustered out on August 28, 1865.  He was discharged from the military on July 1, 1866.  Powell homesteaded east of Burr in Otoe County and then ended up moving to Syracuse where he worked as a wheelwright.  He lived in Syracuse until his death on January 28, 1919.  He was survived by his wife, Aurilla, and six children.  William Powell is buried in the Park Hill Cemetery, Syracuse, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one folder containing seven items.  The bulk of the papers relate to William Powell’s military service, including a furlough certificate and discharge paperwork.  Also included is an 1881 B.M.R.R. train ticket, an 1883 receipt, and a 1918 certificate from the Grand Army of the Republic.  The Burlington & Missouri River Railroad ticket is for a special excursion between Lincoln and Camp Abe Lincoln, September 4-10, 1881.  The 1883 receipt shows that Powell performed two days labor in order to discharge his poll tax for 1883.  The G.A.R. certificate from 1918 appoints Powell as Aide-de-Camp.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
