BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Cheltenham, England, in 1861, William Thomas Baker came to the United States in 1883. He traveled to Mechanicsville, Iowa, and then by wagon to North Platte, Nebraska. Baker served as a foreman on William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s ranch at North Platte. He eventually moved to Gothenburg, Nebraska, where he served for a time as city marshal, night watchman and street commissioner. He then became a veterinarian. Dr. William Thomas Baker died in 1939 at Gothenburg, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder containing mostly correspondence of William Thomas Baker. The letters date from 1912 to 1938. Correspondents include A.E. Sheldon of the Nebraska State Historical Society, and Harry P. Swanson, Nebraska Secretary of State. Also included are several newspaper clippings. The materials in the collection relate to the history of the Gothenburg area and deal substantially with William F. Cody.
