BACKGROUND NOTE

Winfield Scott Miller was born at Allegheny, Pennsylvania, on January 24, 1861.  He married Emma Towsley at Atlantic, Iowa, on June 27, 1889.  The Millers came to Nebraska and spent time in Brown, Custer and Garfield counties.  For a time, Winfield ran a mill and worked as a bricklayer.  Mrs. Miller died on February 18, 1920.  Winfield Scott Miller died at his home near Burwell, Nebraska, on January 12, 1931.  He and his wife are buried in the Custer Center Cemetery at Broken Bow, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of papers relating to Winfield Scott Miller and the Miller family.  The bulk of the collection relates to Miller’s mill at Winfield, Nebraska, in the early 1900s.  Included in the collection are correspondence, record books, daily memoranda books, legal and financial documents, and a manuscript of a play written by Lillie Miller.  The materials in the collection date from 1889-1944.
