BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Born in Painesville, Ohio, on April 27, 1872, Bayard Paine graduated from Grand Island (Nebraska) High School in 1889. He attended Northwestern University, where he received a bachelor’s degree, after which he studied law at the University of Michigan. Passing the Nebraska bar in 1904, Paine practiced law and then became a judge. He served as a Nebraska Supreme Court Justice from 1931-1949.
Bayard Paine married Grace Bentley in 1902. They would have three children: Alice, Charles, and Bayard Jr. Paine served on the Grand Island Public Library board for many years and was author of the book, Pioneers, Indians and buffaloes, published in 1935. Bayard Paine died in Grand Island on April 19, 1955.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder of correspondence, speeches and address, etc. relating to Bayard H. Paine. The bulk of the correspondence is between Paine and A.E. Sheldon, former director of the Nebraska State Historical Society. The correspondence mostly deals with research interests of Bayard Paine. Also included are a few items relating to his candidacy for Nebraska Supreme Court Justice.
Of particular interest are the speeches and addresses written by Paine, including: “The Famous Buffalo Hunt of Grand Duke Alexis of Russia,” “Decisions which have changed Nebraska history,” “Bryan Becomes a National Character,” “The Future of Nebraska,” and “Peace Plans.” Also included are interview notes taken by Paine at a Franklin County pioneers reunion. His notes contain information about four early settlers in Franklin County, including A.B. Gregory, Thomas T. Blank, Frank Austin, and E.R. Arnold.
