BACKGROUND NOTE



John G. Burney, born in Pennsylvania on June 25, 1827, moved with his parents to Indiana early in his life.  He married Mary H. Denton on December 2, 1847 in Cass County, Indiana.  Nine years later, they moved to Nebraska and settled near present day Elkhorn, Nebraska, where he engaged primarily in farming.  Eight years after his wife’s death on 28 January 1875, Burney moved to Hitchcock County, Nebraska, where he resided until his death on October 30, 1905.  During his life, he was an active member of the Grand Lodge of Nebraska and the Methodist Episcopal Church.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one box of papers relating to John G. Burney and the Burney family.  Included in the collection are correspondence, leases and deeds, certificates, two account books of Thomas J. Curran, and a folder of miscellaneous materials.  Thomas Curran was married to John Burney’s daughter, Ella.  Curran worked as  a section foreman for the Burlington Railroad.  The folder of miscellany includes biographical sketches for John G. Burney, Lewis L. Burney, Margaret Ellen “Ella” (Burney) Curran and George L. Burney.  It also includes a one-page historical sketch about Mallalieu University at Bartley, Nebraska.  The materials in the collection date from 1865 to 1944.
