History Nebraska’s State Historic Preservation Office is pleased to announce Auburn, Lincoln, North Platte, Omaha, and Plattsmouth, as the recipients of sub-grants through the Certified Local Government (CLG) program.
The City of Auburn received $21,970 to expand their website for historic architecture, interview assisted living residents and community members to record Auburn’s history and architecture, hold public events and educational programs, create a virtual museum experience, and attend the Restore Nebraska conference.
The City of Lincoln received $24,000 to conduct an initial survey and National Register of Historic Places evaluation of the Axtell Heights/Indian Village neighborhood, develop public education opportunities, enhance online content of historic resources on city websites, and attend the National Alliance of Preservation Commission’s Forum and Restore Nebraska conferences.
The City of North Platte received $7,200 to hire a consultant help complete an Upstairs Downtown workshop, and work with the Nebraska Main Street Network.
The City of Omaha received $68,800 to complete historic preservation guidelines for the city, and attend the National Trust of Historic Preservation conference.
The City of Plattsmouth received $10,000 to complete two National Register of Historic Places/local landmark nominations.
The total granted was $131,970. Projects run from June 1, 2020 to May 30, 2021. Funding comes from the National Park Service in the form of the Historic Preservation Fund. Each CLG matches the project by at least 40% in cash or in kind.
The Certified Local Government program provides grassroots wisdom and resources to encourage local preservation efforts. Communities who become a CLG gain the ability to encourage suitable development through ordinances, landmark historic places, fund public outreach and educational programs, and access technical assistance and training from the History Nebraska Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service. The CLG program is open to all villages, cities, and counties that have zoning regulations.
