NSHS Historic Sites and Museums Join Blue Star Museums Program

Blue Star Museums offer free admission to the nation’s currently serving active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, at participating museums during the summer, Armed Forces Day (May 17) through Labor Day (September 1). Nebraska History Museum hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Also included are the Chimney Rock Ethel S. and Christopher J. Abbott Visitor Center and Museum, and the Fort Robinson History Center.

“At the Nebraska State Historical Society and Nebraska History Museum, we are proud to join the Blue Star Museums program,” said Daryl Bohac, Director of the Nebraska State Historical Society, and former Adjutant General of the Nebraska National Guard. “We’re glad to provide an opportunity for connection with the armed forces community in Nebraska and across the country.”

“The gratitude we have for the sacrifice and service by our Active, Guard, and Reserve service members and their families is never ending,” said Governor Jim Pillen. “The Blue Star Museums program is an extension of that, and Nebraska is privileged to participate.”

Blue Star Museums is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families, in collaboration with the Department of Defense and museums across America. More than 2 million military families have enjoyed Blue Star Museums since the program launched in 2010.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
