Rough on Rats (and biles, and piles, and corns . . . )

Vintage advertisement features six black cats sitting behind a can labeled "Rough on Rats," with the headline "Don't Die in the House" and claims about the product's pest-killing effects.

Old print advertising is weird.  Some may be boring, but if it’s not boring then it’s very weird.    Case in point—Rough on Rats.  Rough on Rats was a poison (arsenic) that was developed and marketed to kill all sorts of vermin by Ephraim Wells of New Jersey.  Mr. Wells, a druggist, advertised his product nationally in large amounts and, it’s weird.  Kind of funny.  More than a little bizarre.  Evidentially, used in Nebraska.

Cover of the 1886 "Rough on Rats" Almanac and Dream Book featuring an illustration of a dead rat, product branding, and poison information in black text on a blue background.

The cover Perhaps more disturbing, in this 1886 Rough on Rats Almanac and Dream Book, is the advertising of medicines for human consumption.  Honestly, I think one would be hard-pressed to find a person who feels comfortable ordering their bile, pile, itch or worm remedy from a rodenticide catalog.

Vintage advertisement for "Rough on Corns" featuring a caricature of a smiling man in a suit, with bold, decorative text around the image.

Have fun perusing tidbits from this little book from our collection.

Vintage advertisement for "Rough on Rats" pest poison, featuring a poem about household troubles with rats and an illustrated scene of people reacting to rats in a kitchen.

Vintage advertisement for "Rough on Rats" rat poison, featuring illustrations of rats, product packaging, and promotional text including a song about the product's effects on rats.

However, if you prefer music to literature, how about a Rough on Rats song?

Black-and-white advertisement for "Rough on Itch" ointment, claiming to cure various skin conditions; features product name, uses, and price.

Vintage advertisement for "Rough on Toothache," featuring a large tooth and cartoon depictions of people with toothaches; promises instant relief for 15 cents.

Vintage 1886 advertisement for Wells' Health Renewer tonic on the left; calendar, poem, and ad for Rough on Piles remedy on the right.

And since it is an almanac and dream book there’s some information on moon phases and what your dream imagery means. Hope it’s helpful.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
