Seasonal Tourism Guide: Chimney Rock

Nebraska State Historical Society at the Chimney Rock Museum and the Ethel and Christopher J. Abbott Visitor Center is seeking a visitor-focused and engaging tourism guide from May to September. The position will interact with visitors from around the world through site programming and gift shop sales, help maintain our Museum and Visitor Center, and green spaces for best visitor experiences. The Tourism guide is to also share information about Chimney Rock and its historical significance as well as other interests around the area. Most of the working time is assisting visitors at the front desk taking admission, gift store sales, and general reception work at the museum.

Designated as a National Historic Site on August 9, 1956, Chimney Rock and the Ethel and Christopher J. Abbott Visitor Center are maintained and operated by the Nebraska State Historical Society. “Towering to the heavens” is how one pioneer described Chimney Rock, the most recognized landmark along the Oregon Trail. Today, the museum pays tribute to those who traveled the trails and features unique exhibits and a gift shop with one-of-a-kind items.

Special Note: We are hiring for two full-time Tourism Guides at the Chimney Rock location.

 

Job Duties

  • Focus on housekeeping functions that includes some light maintenance and/or custodial needs inside and around the museum.
  • Greet all site visitors in person or by phone and provides information on exhibits and events.
  • Assist group and other tourist inquiries, sharing historical information and local tourism.
  • Collect admissions and sell merchandise in the gift shop, providing excellent customer service.
  • Stock and maintain merchandise on the sales floor and communicate when products are low.
  • Balance and prepare daily sales reports and other essential reports using POS systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.

Qualifications / Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Experience in public contact OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning, or areas related to Nebraska history, geography, or culture.

Preferred Qualifications: Preferred dates of employment are May 1st to September 30th. Saturdays and Sundays and holidays are required. The Chimney Rock Museum and the Ethel and Christopher J Abbott Visitor Center is open 7 days a week during the summer/tourism months. High School graduate and experience with customer service OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning or areas related to Nebraska history, geography or culture.

Other: Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Lead the team in light maintenance inside and outside of the museum. This includes cleaning facilities.
  • Knowledge of, or desire to learn, Nebraska's history and culture
  • Ability to interact with the public professionally, work well with people of all ages and abilities
  • Excellent customer service skills, outgoing and friendly personality
  • Dependable; reliable attendance
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to operate a cash register and make change using the POS system

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
