BACKGROUND NOTE

Temperance societies began forming in Nebraska in the late 1860s.  The temperance movement gained strength through the early 1900s.  By the start of World War I, prohibitionists were very active in Nebraska.  Using initiative petitions, they were able to place a prohibition referendum on the 1916 ballot.  To support this amendment, numerous temperance organizations in the state combined to form the Nebraska Dry Federation under the leadership of Charles W. Bryan.  Nebraska would become the 36^th state to ratify the Eighteenth Amendment on January 16, 1919.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of various pamphlets, leaflets and other materials promoting a “dry” Nebraska and the adoption of Prohibition.  Also included are a few anti-Prohibition items.
