The Nebraska State Historical Society is pleased to announce that the National Park Service has designated the City of Crete and Hebron as Certified Local Governments.
The Certified Local Government program is a partnership between the local, state, and federal government to increase local preservation activities and link together local governments who do similar work. Certified Local Governments meet federal and state standards and work to help preserve, revitalize and promote their historic resources and cultural properties in order to strengthen and maintain vibrant communities. Being a Certified Local Government means Crete and Hebron have chosen to promote preservation-related projects through long-range planning, economic development, educational programming, and heritage tourism. While working on becoming a Certified Local Government, Crete worked on planning activities to locally recognize historic places important to the community. Hebron worked on the first phase of a historic audio walking tour and will host a Spring event to celebrate the completion of the Woman’s Suffrage Legacy of Courage Park.

The Certified Local Government program is open to all villages, cities, and counties. Nebraska’s other Certified Local Governments are Auburn, Fairbury, Lincoln, Neligh, North Platte, Omaha, Plattsmouth, Red Cloud, and Sidney. There are more than 2,100 Certified Local Governments across the country. One benefit of the program is through annual matching grants that help Certified Local Governments complete preservation-related projects that are important to them.
