BACKGROUND NOTE
Adelaide Jewett, daughter of Noah and Sarah (Palmer) Jewett, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1852. She worked in a New Hampshire textile mill, making good use of the local library. She started to write and sold some of her writings to various periodicals. When Adelaide was twenty-eight she moved to Nebraska, homesteading near Springview, Keya Paha County. Her neighbor was William Franklin Skinner, who she married on March 12, 1885. The Skinners had three children. Adelaide died of typhoid fever on August 9, 1893.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of a typescript volume of Adelaide Jewett Skinner’s poems. According to family lore, Adelaide wrote many of these poems in her sod shanty while she was “proving up” her homestead near Springview, Keya Paha County, Nebraska.
