BACKGROUND NOTE



The Athenea Club was founded on October 28, 1892, in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was first called the “Round Table Club.” A motto, “We strive to be what we should be” was adopted. The Athenea Club was primarily a literary discussion group which met periodically in the homes of its members. Topics were dedicated to history, politics, and literary subjects.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of records and programs of the Athenea Club of Lincoln, Nebraska, dating from 1892-1936. The collection relates to the activities of the Athenea Club, a women’s discussion group in Lincoln, Nebraska. The minutes reflect the club membership and the group’s discussion topics, which included a variety of historical, political and literary subject matter.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
