BACKGROUND NOTE

Founded in 1895 by Harriet Lothrop, the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) is the nation’s oldest, largest, patriotic youth organization. Membership is open to children under the age of twenty-one who are “lineally descended from a man or woman who, with unfailing loyalty, rendered material aid to the cause of American Independence as a soldier, sailor, civil officer, or recognized patriot in one of the several Colonies or States or of the United States…” There are local chapters in nearly every state as well as several foreign countries. Each application for membership is approved at the national level.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of the records of the Children of the American Revolution (Neb.) arranged in two series: (1) Membership Applications, 1919-1986; and (2) Scrapbooks. All of the applications of Series 1 contain genealogical information on the applicant, tracing his or her ancestry back to a revolutionary war relative. The applications are arranged numerically by assigned national membership number. An “Ancestors Index” lists the names of each revolutionary war ancestor and the national number or numbers of applicants related to him or her. Most of the applicants are from Crete and Lincoln local C.A.R. societies, although a few from other local societies are included.

The scrapbook of Series 2 consists of photographs of national and local members, photographs of local scenes and cemeteries, histories, clippings, correspondence, reports, minutes, programs, and publications. The scrapbook’s contents date from 1924-1927, and relate to several local Nebraska chapters.
