BACKGROUND NOTE
Francis Lynde Kroll was born November 9, 1904, in Fairbury, Nebraska, the son of August and Maude Kroll. He attended the University of Nebraska, 1923-1926, but did not receive his degree. In 1926 he married Viola Hathaway; they had three sons. Kroll taught in the Nebraska and South Dakota school systems from 1927-1942 and again from 1955-1964. During the intervening years, he worked as a meat inspector for the Department of Agriculture. During his second tenure as a teacher, Kroll received his A.B. (1959) and M.A. (1962) degrees from Chadron State College at Chadron, Nebraska. From 1964 until his retirement in 1971, he served as Superintendent of Schools in the Nebraska towns of Sunol, Palisade, and Orleans.
Kroll’s writing career began in 1936, when he wrote a play for his students, and he wrote steadily until his death in 1973. He wrote primarily for the 9-13 years age group, publishing plays, novels, and short stories that were set on the western frontier. He published five books: Young Sioux Warrior, 1952, which won the Junior Literary Guild Award; Young Sandhills Cowboy, 1953; Young Crow Raider, 1954; Young Medicine Man, 1956; and Top Hand, 1965. His works also appeared in various magazines and anthologies.
