BACKGROUND NOTE

Jay Weaver, son of Solomon and Lucy Weaver, was born in Thayer County, Nebraska, on January 26, 1877.  He served with the 1^st Nebraska Infantry during the Spanish-American War.  He married Mabel Clark on July 4, 1899, at Davenport, Nebraska.  They had one child, a daughter Wilda.  Jay farmed for a few years in Thayer County, but then the couple divorced and Jay married Adela Toogood on July 8, 1907, at Colorado Springs, Colorado.  They moved to Tripp County, South Dakota, where they farmed and eventually had six children.  Jay and Adela divorced in the 1920s, and Jay married Mame (Pollock) Crow on May 31, 1929, at Ellensburg, Washington.  Jay Weaver died on April 13, 1961, and is buried in Terrace Heights Memorial Park at Yakima, Washington, next to his third wife.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one folder of papers relating to Jay Weaver’s military service.  The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence written by Jay Weaver while serving in the Spanish-American War.  The letters date from May-November, 1898.  Also included in the folder are a pension certificate, 1926, and an award certificate for his service, 1941.
