The collection consists of typescripts of a journal, 1849, kept by John H. Benson while traveling overland from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, to search for gold. He describes trains going west, geography, sickness and problems incurred, sites visited, Indians seen and the two-year anniversary celebration of the Mormons in Utah.
